A Visit to Digby & Annapolis Royal

The Bay of Fundy region is a beautiful place to visit, and we enjoyed exploring it on our Nova Scotia Coastal Road Trip. I wanted to highlight the Digby region and Annapolis Royal since the lighthouses here were beautiful to visit. Also, Annapolis Royal is a great historic town to visit.

As we made our way from Yarmouth along the Southern part of the Bay of Fundy, we stopped at Gilbert’s Cove Lighthouse, “The Greatest Little Lighthouse in Canada”. The weather was such a mix this day. One minute rainy, the next sunny! We arrived at this little light in the afternoon after our time at Cape Forchu. The rocky beach was great for beach-combing, and it’s was quite a scenic spot. There is a museum and tea room inside the lighthouse, but it was closed during our visit.

The Digby region seemed so peaceful and less populated. At times, we had these places all to ourselves without another soul around. When we arrived in Digby, “The Scallop Capital of the World” not many establishments were open after 5pm, so we walked the Main Street to sight-see.

Before departing for Annapolis Royal, we visited Prim Point Lighthouse before the sunset. This light is painted with red and white vertical stripes, and sits perched on a rocky coast on the bay. There is a small walking path from the parking lot and picnic tables for visitors. We loved the bay views here. We were there at golden hour, and it was lovely to sit on the rocks and relax a bit after a really active day of sight-seeing.

We arrived in Annapolis Royal in the evening, and checked into the Carlisle House Inn, a lovely bed & breakfast in a beautiful old sea captain’s house. The innkeeper made us a reservation at Bistro East down the street. From our window seat, we had views of the water, and enjoyed the wine selection and menu.

The next morning, we had to depart for the Wolfville region, but we did enjoy a walk around the historic district of Annapolis Royal before we had to leave. We strolled down St. George Street, one of the oldest streets in North America. The buildings reminded me so much of the ones found in our New England historic towns, which makes perfect sense, since its home to some of North America’s earliest European settlers dating back to 1605.

If you are able to stay longer be sure to visit Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, Fort Anne National Historic Site, and Port Royal National Historic Site.

Here’s some highlights from our time in Digby and Annapolis Royal…

This is a vast region to explore, so I focused on Digby & Annapolis Royal. I wish we would have had an extra couple of days to really make the most of it, so I’d suggest adding an extra day for this region.
