The Quintessential New England Fall Wardrobe

New England’s having a moment the past couple of years, and so is its wardrobe. Color me thrilled, because when you’ve been dressing this way for years, it is always nice to see a new generation reach for your staples. It might be a trend for the younger set, but it’s a lifestyle choice for those who live in all the seasons year long here. We turn to more classic retailers like L.L. Bean, G.H. Bass, Ralph Lauren, Barbour, Brooks Brothers, and J. Crew because if it’s not broke…why fix it? Practicality is now more popular than ever, and I’m here for it.

Today, I wanted to share what I reach for every fall here in New England. The classic fisherman sweater, the waxed barn coat, the Bean Boot–they all have a place in the autumn wardrobe line-up. New England is a unique place in that you can enjoy the splendor of autumn leaves and cooler temps in the mountains and lakes or along the coast by the sea. It really is a marvelous season to behold in our small corner of the country. With the Ivy League influence and years of New Englanders buying with purpose and intention, it has bred this unique understated style. A style that is timeless, and works whether you are enjoying fall on the coast of Maine or in the mountains of New Hampshire.

As a born and bred northern Illinois native, I am no stranger growing up with this aesthetic. A child of 80’s with summers on Lake Michigan, and all things preppy trending as I came of age, this has been my style since I grew up in the Midwest. We are going on 10 years of being New Englanders now, and I must say my style feels more at home than ever here in Connecticut.

Here are my favorite pieces I reach for every fall. All are back in stock for you to shop now. Here’s my quintessential New England fall wardrobe…

to note…

jackets

All of these are worth the spend in my opinion. They last, and they are classic–two things that should always go together. My favorites include this Waxed Barbour Jacket, L.L. Bean Barn Coat, and the timeless Brooks Brothers Trench Coat. There can be quite a chill in the air come autumn, so you can’t go wrong with a classic navy peacoat either.

sweater weather & an Oxford

Two favorites I reach for once fall arrives is this L.L. Bean Classic Fisherman Sweater and a good quality Fair Isle sweater. There’s been so many new fits of the Oxford lately, but I just love the classic Cotton Ralph Lauren Oxford Shirt.

footwear

I love a good leather loafer, and the timeless Gucci Horsebit Loafer is a staple, but if you are worried about Fido tearing them up, spring for the G.H. Bass Weejuns. The Classic Bean Boot is a must, and I’m loving this spin on the classic with a Tumbled Leather and Flannel Lined Bean Boot style. I have a few wellies and waterproof options for those moody rainy days and these Barbour Chelsea Rain Boots are really cute.

You can consider this your New England fall wardrobe starter pack. All tried and true pieces that I have and enjoy wearing once mid-September arrives here.

Happy pre-fall!
