Happy November! This month is really a month of home over here. We are starting our dining room this weekend! Today, I want to share the inspiration and direction of this space. I always think of dining rooms as little jewel boxes. They have jewelry (hello, beautiful chandelier!), some extra flair (usually with wallpaper & mouldings), and are a place to gather and celebrate holidays.
Our dining room is unusual in the sense that this old colonial had it designated as a den originally. The former owners opted to dine open concept where our breakfast nook is between the kitchen and living room. I prefer a breakfast table and a separate dining room. I know it’s been popular to embrace open concept everything, but I do love a formal dining room and we actually use ours quite a bit every week. I’m big on family dinners together and love to cook and entertain, so to me, it’s not a room we just walk by everyday.
The Inspiration
Traditional meets Coastal meets Equestrian Chic…
I want this space to be a chameleon in a sense. I want it to vibe with the color story and the rest of our home. I also want it to be able to embrace the change of seasons and holiday tables without having to be blue & white everything all the time. The great thing about blue and white is that it plays so well with the other crayons in the box. Also, I have a pretty vast China collection and I love to mix and match those patterns often, especially for our holiday celebrations.
The Centerpiece
I found this gorgeous table used online when we first moved in, but the only downside was they only had 4 of the original 8 chairs and had sold them a la carte. So, at first I thought, maybe I’ll hunt down the matching chairs, but now have embraced mixing in some slipcovered chairs. When it comes to wood furniture, I prefer buying older quality pieces. I prefer to have a good mix of old and new in my spaces. Eventually, we are going to comb some favorite haunts for a sideboard and hutch. I don’t want to rush that and find something we really want in the space.
Walls & Jewelry
The walls are going to be wallpapered in the same Les Touches by Brunschwig and Fils in Cadet I used on the fabric in our living room. I’ve always adored this paper, so it’s one of the unifying elements between our spaces. It looks so good in a dining room. We are also going to have some fun with moldings and trim. Finalizing those decisions now. For the chandelier, I keep going back and forth on going with the RL equestrian vibe or a really “pretty” one. I’m giving myself a deadline so we can get it ordered and installed before Thanksgiving.
