I share a lot of travel content and one of the top questions I get besides “where to stay?” is “what to pack and wear?” So, I wanted to share what I’m packing for our Nantucket summer vacation with you pre-trip to help you plan what to bring when you visit the island.
We’ve been going to Nantucket every summer since we moved out to New England. It’s my favorite summer place and probably the trip I look forward to most in the warmer months, a close second being our family vacation on Lake Champlain every August. Sometimes we stay for a week or longer and sometimes we just pop over for a few days. This time we are staying a week, so I’m bringing my expandable suitcase because there is some really great shopping on island too.
The Classic Coastal Wardrobe
Nantucket is pretty laid-back. During the day it’s a lot of beach wear, swimsuits under cover-ups, active wear, tanks and shorts, or sun dresses. The weather can be a mix from perfect summer days to rainy days to chilly gray mornings and cooler evenings. Layers are essential. Especially if you are sailing or boating on a cooler day. Sweaters, a rain jacket, and wraps are handy. I really don’t dress up besides putting on a summer dress, cute earrings, and a wicker clutch for dinner at night. White jeans and a cute top is a pretty standard evening out uniform too. At night, I usually have a wrap or sweater in case it becomes cooler. Basically, just your classic coastal summer wardrobe.
One important thing to keep in mind, pack the right shoes. Most of the streets are cobblestone, brick, or crushed seashells, and sidewalks may be uneven–especially in town. Some shops and restaurants are on docks too. You don’t want to twist an ankle so flats, sandals, tennis shoes, and espadrilles are the best to pack.
You’ll want to pack for the beach too, so bring a mix of swimsuits, cover-ups, and sandals. Sun hats and ball caps are great to have for sunny days to protect your skin. Plus, you’ll see a lot of that in town, when dining outside, or with your toes in the sand for before dinner cocktails.
